Filliers Next Generation Barcode

Innovating with Traditional Class: Filliers Distillery embraces the next generation barcode

At Filliers, a Belgian distillery where spirits have been produced for six generations, tradition and innovation go hand in hand. This summer, they became the first FMCG-product in Belgium to implement the new generation of barcodes. We discussed this with Laya Dejonckheere, Brand Manager of Filliers Distillery.

Next generation barcode, A Strategic Choice

The decision to implement the new generation of barcodes came at the perfect time, during the development of one of their new whiskies.
Laya Dejonckheere explains: "the next generation barcodes offers several advantages. But for us, the main benefit is the flexibility it provides compared to a standard QR code. With the next generation barcode, we can update the information behind the QR code without the need to print new labels.”

This means that product information can be easily updated, and much more information can be shared than what could fit on a label or a standard QR code. It is not only cost-effective but also more sustainable.

What is the next generation barcode?

The next generation barcode is a new form of barcode, in the form of a dynamic QR code that contains a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), but offers many more possibilities than traditional barcodes, such as a link to the digital world.

A seamless process

“The implementation process went smoothly,” says Laya. “Once we understood that the information behind the QR code could be modified without changing the QR code itself, we were able to get started swiftly. With the support of our integration partner, 'Master Data Partners', adding everything to My Product Manager was seamless.”

The entire process—from idea to execution—took only four weeks. “We expect this to go even faster with future products,” she added.

Prepared for the future

Filliers Distillery plans to add the ‘QR code powered by GS1’ to other products as well. “We suspect that in the future, an extended ingredient declaration will become mandatory for alcoholic products. The new generation barcode provides us with the solution to add this without using a label full of tiny text,” Laya explains.

The transition from the traditional barcode to the new generation barcode will be a gradual process, but the family business is eager to fully take advantage of the benefits.
For other companies considering making this step, Laya has an important message:
“It’s crucial to recognize the value of being able to change data without adjusting the label. That not only saves costs but also offers tremendous flexibility.”

A Step Forward in the FMCG Sector

Filliers Distillery is leading the way with the introduction of the new generation barcode in the FMCG sector. Laya Dejonckheere says: “It’s great to stay ahead of the times and be prepared for the future. It gives us peace of mind knowing we are ready for whatever comes.”

With this innovative step, Filliers not only continues its rich tradition but also demonstrates its commitment to adapting and innovating while continuing to strive to deliver high-quality spirits to everyone.
