Publication of the new GS1 Benelux datamodel DIY, garden & pet (February 2025)
The new version of the GS1 Benelux data model for the DIY, garden & pet sector (3.1.30) has been published . It will go live on 22 February 2025. Retailers will receive data according to the new data model from then on. Suppliers should therefore ensure that any changes have been implemented by then.
We would like to once again draw your attention to the recent changes in GPC-bricks that have been implemented in the latest releases. These adjustments relate to powered and non-powered hand tools, as well as stationary tools, along with their associated accessories, parts, and consumables.
The reorganisation of hand and stationary tools, along with the split between powered and non-powered products, was carried out by a working group from the Benelux, consisting of suppliers and retailers. Thanks to this restructuring, products are now better presented online and are easier to find.
At the international level, changes have also been made. For example, consumables required for hand tools (such as drill bits and saw blades) now have their own GPC-bricks.
Additionally, several other adjustments have been made, including a cleanup requested by retailers. For example, attributes like "works with..." have been replaced by one uniform, conditionally mandatory attribute, "energy source," to facilitate targeted choices.
These changes, implemented since the May 2024 release, have led to adjustments in the data model. Therefore, it may be necessary to make changes to your data. An overview of changes is published with each release, but since there have also been reorganisations and additions of bricks in this case, it is important to check whether your products are still correctly classified.
Data Optimisation and Regulatory Compliance
We emphasise the importance of optimal utilisation of the data pool. Information that is currently considered optional may be crucial for the end consumer. Moreover, due to regulations such as the GPSR (product safety) and PPWR (packaging), correct information regarding product liability and packaging is becoming increasingly important.

Key changes:
- Redesign or activation of bricks to record consumable items for tools.
- Adding various attributes to the data model to comply with the GPSR (Global Product Safety Regulation).
- Adding and correcting GPC brick translations for Dutch and French translations.
- The supplier's internal article number will be mandatory from May 24. Starting February 22, you will be notified of this through a warning in the GS1 data pool.
Expired attributes
From February 22, certain attributes will be discontinued. These attributes were originally defined based on the needs of the time, but these needs have changed over the years, and data is now exchanged differently. For several of these discontinued attributes, replacement attributes are available and can be found in the published data model.
The discontinued attributes include:
- Claims such as: "hygienic indicator" or "dust proof indicator", which are considered unclear and therefore undesirable.
- The way the energy source is specified: after consultation with retailers, this has been changed from indicative fields to the consistent use of an energy source accompanied by a picklist.
- Certain attributes that were available both as an indicative field and as a selectable value in a picklist, causing redundancy.
- Where possible, we align with internationally available attributes.
